Sons & Daughters: The 50 Best, 2 Michelin Restaurant That Keeps Getting Better 16 Years In

It has been quite a year for Sons & Daughters already. In these initial months of 2026, they’ve garnered a rare spot in the second annual North America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards (of which I am an Academy Chair), a returning two Michelin stars and a James Beard finalist nomination for Best Chef California for Harrison Cheney. In November 2025, S&D moved from its tiny original space — now housing already-Michelin-starred modern Filipino Restaurant Naides — to San Francisco’s Mission District in the gorgeous, wood-walled space that was home to Michelin-starred Osito (whose chef, Seth Stowaway, recently opened enchanting, hidden Lore).

(Whew!) Amid all the accolades and changes, more people than ever are discovering this long-great restaurant. The restaurant was opened by Teague Moriarty and Matt McNamara (who has since moved on) in 2010, holding a Michelin star most of those years. Since London-born Cheney joined in October 2022 and became executive chef three months later (my initial review), he grew S&D to two Michelin stars and a Green Star in 2025, in keeping with his background. Cheney helmed my favorite now-closed restaurant in Stockholm — two Michelin-starred Gastrologik — also cooking at The Ledbury and The Square in London and SF’s three Michelin Quince. I’ve also written of their creative non-alcoholic pairing when it first launched.
